Da 40 Aircraft - If your sights are set on a four-position composite piston, the Diamond DA40 Star may be on your list of aircraft to consider. There's a lot to like, and DA40 owners rave about the performance and reliability of their aircraft. But the stamp of approval may be the plane's impressive safety record, thanks to its clever overall design and easy handling of the plane around the runway. DA40 models have been around for over 20 years, but even the earliest DA40 models sell for some of the most expensive models on the market today.

Starting life as Dimona in the early 1980s, Austria's Diamond first produced the H36 engine for the European market, and eventually got its feet wet in America when it imported the Austrian DV20 Katana two-seater. The company changed its name to Diamond in 1996 and unveiled a prototype at the Friedrichshafen show in Germany, with plans to produce the DA40 four-seater. These early testbeds featured Rotak 914 (and Continental IO-240) powerplants, Diamond quickly realized that the Zvezda needed more power and eventually fitted the aircraft with the company's Licoming IO-360-M1A 180 hp mill. Diamond's experience with cruisers is certainly evident in the DA40's T-tail construction, starting with a long wing with a high aspect ratio. The clean fuselage is constructed in a wet layout in two halves joined lengthwise, with the fixed stabilizer as part of the assembly, and the tail and wings added separately. The cabin/cockpit has a large front-hung canvas and a rear pin release hatch for rear seat passengers provides efficient emergency exit. It is worth noting that the fuel supply of the DA40 is well protected in removable aluminum cells stored in a double carbonate arrangement, with no tendency to catch fire after a crash, according to our crash research over the years.

The DA40s aren't exactly superior to the Cirrus SR, but the Licoming IO-360 matches the aircraft well for good speed and agility. Later model Stars faithfully cruised at 150 knots, while earlier models were typically 145 knots. Gross weight was 2535 pounds for earlier models (and 2645 pounds for later ones), but check that against the typical 3050-pound Cirrus SR22 and 2450-pound Cessna 172. It came in 2014. DA40-NG. However, they are more common in stars with an incoming supply.

The Star (with all-electric avionics) was first introduced with traditional flight instruments, although many were modified by Aspen and Garmin EFIS. The DA40 was one of the first clippers to be certified with the Garmin G1000 integrated avionics, and many owners were less than happy with the upgrade to these early systems, especially when it came to VAAS capabilities. The newer generation G1000 NKSi systems are a big upgrade, especially with the GFC 600 autopilot. The earlier BendikKing KAP140 were tariff based which should be taken into account during the purchase before purchase.

Like the DA40 wreck, we continue to be surprised by the low number of accidents reported by the NTSB. The limited number of Runway Loss of Control (RLOC) events confirms what we know from our own experience flying these aircraft and that they can easily handle significant crosswinds and have good ground handling characteristics. It's a good short field machine, but pilots should always fly in numbers. In one particular accident, the POH called for 1,570 feet of obstacles during takeoff, but only 1,150 feet was available. Sure enough, the plane hit the trees.

Owners love their DA40s and with proper training, most report an easy transition. "The center stick is fun and took about a minute to get used to." I often burn 7.6 GPH at 130 knots at 65 percent power at about 7,000 feet," reports John Mullen of the 2003 DA40. There are good aftermarket models, including the Cabin Cool air conditioning system from Florida-based Premier Aircraft, and some owners invest in electronic ignition, composite propellers and a forced aeromotive compressor with a belt drive. Equipped with a supercharger, DA40s generate full power at sea level up to 7000 feet MSL.

The typical retail price of a 2000 DA40 Star is $170,000, a 2009 DA40-XLS is $310,000, and a 2019 DA40-XLT almost always sells for around $500,000.
